An defense minister has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential security risks associated with Chinese vehicles, while staff have been instructed to avoid discussing classified matters in all cars.
Safety Guidance for MoD Personnel
During a recent interview on LBC, a defence minister addressed claims that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified information while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
The minister said that the MoD is “examining” cars from China within its fleets, but stressed that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.
Our department has a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a Chinese car or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD technology into their car, not to have discussions at a secret classification in any vehicle, due to the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. This is a prudent and reasonable thing for anyone worried about safety.
After it was put to him that it would be wise for the ministry to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is exactly what we are looking into at the present time.”
Broader Security Context
The announcement comes as claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the existence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made buses, which could allow the Chinese government to switch off public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been directing laser beams at RAF aircrew, labeled a “highly dangerous” act by defence officials.
The broader defence situation highlights the significance of robust protocols and vigilance in all areas of government operations, from transport usage to discussions habits.
